Packaging handling machines are very clever as they are used for protecting the products ready for everything that an industry may need. There are several different types of packaging and there is primary, and secondary.
Primary packaging is where the process starts, the package is what is in contact with whatever is inside. This can range from food all the way up to liquid.
Secondary packaging is where a tray and shrink film is around the primary packaging so if you have a microwave meal so. Its use is also for branding and display also logistics. With secondary packaging it has to be able to transport the products in a safe fashion, also it keeps the primary packaging in the right condition and the original condition.
Shrink Hood Applicator
This is used for large pallets or industrial use, this packaging machine is where a thermoplastic film is put over and then sealed at one end placed loosely over a pallet. Then pallet get passed through the chosen heat source this applies the heat and then shrinks onto the pallet. This is used for bricks, breeze blocks and in the building industry to transfer large materials.
Pallet Shrink Oven
A pallet shrink oven is a machine that shrink frames round the film drawing machines that are used for logistics with large pallets. They cover the pallet and then it shrinks tight over using a vertical moveable heating frame these can either be gas heated or electrically heated. The reason these machines are used is because they have low energy consumption, they come with monitoring unit and this includes the temperature checking systems which is important with certain logistic company’s.
A belt conveyor is a type of conveyor system, it operates with two or more pulleys or drums as some refer to them in the industry. The pulleys are powered by moving the belt and the material on the belt forward. The pulley that is powered is called the drive pulley the other one is unpowered and this is refer to as the idle pulley. There are different types of conveyer belts that are made of all kinds of materials from PVC and rubber materials. Belts have layers of different materials. Belt conveyers are used in conveyer transport, like escalators as well as assembly lines. Also they are in supermarkets.
They have to be reliable and well-made when they are being use, mainly in warehouse they are usually used with computer controlled systems. They are used because they allow large volumes to move quickly and effectively for companies that need it. Belt conveyers are used because they are the most robust and also not very expensive.
Belt Bend Conveyers are used in airports and these range from bends, spirals and merges these can travel in any direction with guaranteed load stability. The units can be bent to 90-degree bends but almost any of degree can be possible.
Flight belted conveyers or elevators are available in almost any size and can be fitted with a hopper to make loading easy by hand and more affective. These are usually based on a slider bed incliner but the PVC up stands are welded to the conveyer belt to help. High angles are achievable with this kind of belt as well. However with flight belted conveyers these are custom built as this is easier that trying to match with just anything.
Wire and Plastic Mesh Conveyors are used in a variety of industries and range from wide gap enrobed to chain belts. This range can allow air and fluids to get around the products being used on the belts. Wire mesh belts are twisted into each other this means they can only go in a straight line.
Flow Wrapping Machines
A flow wrap machine has several names it is known as I fin seal wrapping, crimp seal wrapping and horizontal bagging. It is also a horizonally operated machine, it has an infeed conveyor, a film feed assembly, a forming area, a cutting head and a discharge area. The flow wrapping machines have 3 different kind of feeding these are Manual feeding, Semi – Automatic and Fully automatic
Flow wrapping is a packaging process that over wraps a product with a film, There are 100’s of products that we use on a daily basis that are flow wrapped. The wrapping materials that are used on the products does depend what it is. Foods can be wrapped in a food grade clear or printed polypropelene film.
Flow wrapping is a versatile and cost effective solution for packaging. There are 2 types of films that can be used these are heat seal film and cold seal films. The films types are Polypropylene (PP-OPP) This film is used for chocolate bars and ice cream. There is the Polyester (PET) This film is heat resistance so this is mainly used with microwaveable meals, It is also used for lidding materials on frozen products, These products can directly from the freezer to the oven.
Lower Reel Flow Wrapping
The Lower flow wrapper is a machine that is a horizontally operated machine,
Lower reel feeding is suitable for several products these are soft products and sticky products, the belt and the film that is used is gentle so that limited damage is done to the product. All product-contacted areas are in stainless steel or POM construction. Some of the features of the lower reel flow wrapper is that is usually has 3 sets of temperature controls. They usually have a single film reel. The packaging types for this machine is Bags, Film and Foil.
Band Wrapping Machines
A banding machine is a machine that wraps material around a product or several products, it seals them with heat or glue.
If you choose a dedicated banding machine they use a single reel of film. The process is slow, the film is transported around the arch and then pulled tight before sealing. The band wrapping machines are usually used to reinforce the cellophane and can be transparent or have printing on them.
Roll wrapping machine
A roll wrapping machine is a machine which wraps cylindrical products in a series of folding and heating sealing. This wrapping machine uses polypropylene as its main film to wrap products. Roll wrapping machines mainly wraps biscuits. Roll wrap machines are like overwrapping machines and this is because the product passes through a sheet of film and the seal is made. Where roll wrapping is different is to how the product is handled, biscuits are fragile so the machine is designed to gently guide each other pack without touching. Roll wrapping is very good at packaging small round, square and rectangular products.
Pleat Wrapping Machine
Pleat wrapping is where the folds of material are elegantly organised to give a specific number of clean, uniformed folds all around the products then they wrap it neatly sealing the material on the bottom of the product. The main products that are used by a pleat wrapper are usually luxury items. For example Cakes and pies have high quality wrapping used with the pleat wrapping machine as it makes it perfect. Pleat wrapping machines have been designed to accommodate all sizes and products.
Foil and Band wrapping
A foil and band wrapping machine wraps the product first in an aluminium foil before the product then gets wrapped in a band of paper, This type of machine is mainly used for wrapping chocolate and sweets. These machines are often known as turret styles of machine, these are popular because of their high running speeds and can reach up to 300 packs per minute. The option for producing a wrapped chocolate bar are usually in two piece wrapping with a combination of foil and paper with a sealed plastic envelope this is usually produced on a horizontal flow wrapping machine, The reason these machines are great for chocolate is because foil and plastic are necessary to stop greasy cocoa.
A stretch film wrapping machine is a wrapping machine which pushes a product through a sheet of stretch film it then gathers it underneath and product and seals it by using a heat tunnel or crimping the ends to seal it off. Products used on a stretch machine is mainly used for fresh food, this is usually because little or no heat is required. Fresh meat, vegetables, fruit and ready meals are all used in machines like these. With a stretch film it can also be pre stretched this is a process that allows stretch film to be stretched before being applied to a product.
An L-Sealing machine which uses heat sealable film folded in half along its length. When a product is being wrapped it is placed between the two halves of film before the film is sealed around the product, it uses an L shaped sealing bar. This style of shrink wrap is used for display purposes, during the process of the wrapping the left over film is trimmed away and removed. Both PVC and Polyolefin film can be used as a 40% shrink property when the heat is applied. When the product travels through the heat shrink tunnel the film is tightly shrunk around the product. L- Sealing machine range from the low cost entry level chamber machines all the way to high speed fully automatic shrink wrappers, they can run as fast as 120 packs per minute.
With a skin packer it can have a roller press to produce multi impression profile cuts and euroslots in one operation, also the can display packing items on to card for point of sale display with high clarity. They can be used for transit skin packaging using a board and polythene based skin film. The boards can be manually cut or they can be cut with a guillotine added. Common in DIY and small building and electric products. It should not be confused with a form of Blister Packing which uses preformed rigid plastic components to attach the product to the cartonboard.
Fold Wrapping Machine
A fold wrapping machine is a machine that wraps material like aluminium or paper in a series of folding. It wraps a flexible material around everything that is needed. There are different styles of wrapping and because it is so versatile it is used with so many industries. The techniques and styles of wrapping depends on the products.
Twist wrapping machines are used for the sweets with twisted ends on the for example the quality streets and roses. There are machines that are designed for twist wrapping, these can produce a product with one or two films at the same time. Twist wrappers can wrap with the following products Cellophane, PVC, Waxed paper, and Polypropylene. The twist machines wrap round, oval and square shape sweets. Some single machines wrap from 200 pieces per minute and some of the high speed ones wrap from 450 per minutes, a twist wrapping machine is used because it is used to protect the candy from becoming moist, light and other issues. There are 3 different kinds of twisting these are cut and wrap, sachet wrap and candy double twist. Then there is the preformed candy there are two kinds of twists for that and they are length twisters these are fairly uncommon but are in the industry. There are also cross twisters these cut a piece off the film and the sweetie is then wrapped.
A container sealing machine is for sealing machine for toothpaste tubes, cosmetic tubes, and chocolate tubes. They are also used for sealing aluminium laminated tubes. There are several types of machines, these range from semi-automatic film sealing machines, these come with automatic film positioning and cutting, a die storage compartment, top table and the usual hourly production is 300-400. There is the automatic film sealing machines, these come automatic feed for the roll, built-in compressor.
PFFS - Package Form Fill and Seal or Vertical form fill sealing machine, when these are used in production it is because they are a type of automated assembly line. These are used in the food industry the machine also constructs plastic bags out of a film as they are filling the bags with the products. Solid products and liquids can be packaged with these machines.
Strapping Machines and Materials
There are several names that strapping machines go by they are bundling and banding. The strap may also be referred to as Strapping, This is mostly used in the packaging industry.
There are several types of straps and there are made from steel or various plastics and are usually a flexible flat material.
If the industry requires a heavy duty holding they would use steel strapping as this is heavy duty and available in a variety of thicknesses as well as different grades of steel.
A polypropylene strap is designed for light to medium tasks like bundling and palletizing. This available is various widths, thickness and polymer variations.
Polypropylene strapping can be printed on before or after. Both options offer security and marketing advantages to the strapped product if printing is done onto the straps.
Also polypropylene strapping is known to degrade under direct sunlight and can lose up to 50% of the applied tension.
Polyester and nylon, these are the strongest types of plastics that are used for strapping products and are used instead of using steel, Polyester provides excellent tension on rigid loads. With Polyester there specialized types that are available, for example in cold climates a strap bonded in hot glue used because it is weather proof.
Nylon strap is the greatest strength of all three plastics but is the most expensive which is why many people choose not to use this. Nylon strap use to be used nearly everywhere but overtime it has been replaced by polyester. Some industries use the Corded and Woven strapping these are available in several constructions. Some of these types are recyclable. Because corded and woven polyester is light and soft it is also a safer to steel banding.
Paper strap is exactly what it says it is used to strap paper products between industrial processes, this allows the bundle to be introduced into the process without the need to cut the straps.
